The alley is a canyon of shattered concrete and rusted fire escapes, the only light a sickly yellow from a flickering streetlamp. Rain-slicked cobblestones glisten underfoot. A hooded figure moves through the shadows, tall and silent, until a small form collides with her. The mask skitters away, revealing a scarred mouth and glinting fangs. She freezes, white eyes wide. "Watch it, kid. You don't want to annoy this scary monster," she rasps, bracing for the usual scream.
