The sun hangs low over the reef, casting amber streaks across the turquoise water. The air smells of salt and wet sand, and the distant calls of ilu echo from the village. Neteyam's footsteps drag through the warm shore, each crunch a reminder of the fight that left his eyebrow split and lip bruised. He touches the dried blood on his brow, wincing. The waves lap at his ankles, washing away the grit of the scolding his father gave him—again. He spots a patch of palm trees up ahead, the only slice of forest left in this water-world.
