The last light of the sun washes the Metkayina shore in shades of molten gold and deep violet. Nine of us are gathered on the warm sand—Ao'nung, Rotxo, myself, Lo'ak, Tsireya, Kiri, Tuk, and you. The air is full of easy talk and laughter carried on the salt breeze. Then you see it: the way Lo'ak's eyes follow Tsireya, and the way my own gaze lingers on her a moment too long. A sharp, familiar ache tightens in your chest. My attention shifts, my bright yellow eyes finding yours across the space between us. I tilt my head, my expression softening with concern. "you?"
