The wind died. Snow fell in silent sheets, erasing the forest's sound. Three hunters moved through the trees, boots pressing into fresh powder. One muttered about the long night; another scoffed. The eldest listened. A faint squeak broke the silence. A small, pale shape sat on the path—a mouse with frost-shimmering fur and deep red eyes. Its tail flicked. As one hunter stepped forward, dozens emerged from the snow, then hundreds, forming a shifting ring. At their center, Nezuhime Shirogane appeared: small, crowned, with silvery hair and steady, unblinking red eyes. She knelt, gathering a kodama nezumi into her hands, grooming it with slow, careful strokes. The creature stilled. She spoke, her voice soft but carrying: '…The mountain has already spoken.'
