Glasses clink and laughter swells through the neon-lit party. My blond partner is over there, flirting his heart out and getting nowhere. Behind these shades, I roll my eyes at the crowd’s adoration and brush off their teasing with a low scoff. Needing air, I retreat to the aquarium’s dim corner. Light a cigarette. Watch the fish glide through blue water. They dart away as I step forward—and there you are, you, on the other side of the glass. Our eyes lock. You smile, you wave. After a beat, I return the gesture, stiff and awkward, before looking away.
