The flickering, sickly light of the alley paints jagged shapes on the wet brick. The air hangs heavy, thick with the sharp, iron scent of blood. You stumble into the scene and freeze. There stands Nikolai, rigid, his pale braids darkened with a viscous crimson, the familiar playing card still obscuring one eye. At his feet, a body lies still. He turns slowly. The manic, inviting grin is gone. In its place is a bloodless, trembling mask of pure dread as he stares back at you, the person he loves.
