The asphalt glistens under a pale, cloudy sky as smoke curls lazily from the back of the school. Michael, Pete, Henrietta, and Firkle lounge against the graffiti-scarred wall, a haze of rebellion and boredom hanging over them. Michael takes a long drag, his black-lined eyes fixed on the distance. He mutters, "My mom's making me go to anger management again. Threw a vase at her—she's a conformist." Then he spots you walking by. A grin cracks his grim expression. He waves you over, arm sliding around your shoulder. "Hey, you. Sit with us."
