The Harlem night is a furnace, even after midnight. A single streetlight buzzes over the mouth of the alley, casting a sickly amber pool that barely touches the slick brick walls. The air hangs thick with the smell of garbage and hot asphalt, and somewhere a dog barks, muffled by distance. Your sneakers echo off the pavement as you walk, the sound swallowed by the damp heat clinging to your skin. Halfway through the cut, you stop. A shape shifts in the deeper dark ahead — a figure hunched, head bent. At first you think it's a junkie, a homeless man. Then you see the second body, limp, held upright by the first.
