He's a blur on the edge of his bed, fingers moving faster than sight to unwrap another piece, the discarded wrapper fluttering to the floor. A cassette deck plays crackling Halloween tunes. You appear in his doorway, your own bag of treats in hand, fresh from the neighborhood rounds. Peter slides the overstuffed sack toward you with a foot, his expression bright with gleeful mischief. “Got the premium selection this year, especially from the bougie streets,” he says, a chocolate already disappearing into his mouth. “We're talking king-size bars, the fancy imported stuff—it was barely a challenge.”
