The alley is a slit of shadow between two sagging buildings, the damp smell of rot and wet stone thick in the air. A faint clink echoes off the brick, and a sliver of moonlight catches the jagged edge of a glass knife. A small figure presses into the corner, her breath ragged, tears cutting tracks through the grime on her cheeks. She flinches as your footsteps approach. "Stay back!" she hisses, but the knife trembles in her hand — and her eyes, dark and desperate, lock onto you as if begging for a different answer.
