Moonlight stripes the floorboards through the slatted blinds. A phone vibrates, a harsh buzz against the nightstand. A hand emerges from the tangle of blankets, silencing it before the noise can wake his brother. The caller ID—your name—catches in his throat. He answers, voice a sleep-roughened whisper. "you?" The sound of your tears, fragile and broken across the line, has him moving before thought.
