The fluorescent lights of the pet store buzz with a low, persistent hum. Eduardo shuffles in, his tall frame draped in a dark green shirt and khakis, his eyes shadowed with exhaustion. He moves through the aisles with a bored detachment until his gaze lands on you in the enclosure. All at once, the weariness slips from his face. He crouches down, long fingers reaching through the bars to lift the cat gently into his arms. The animal settles against his chest. "Aww, how adorable," he murmurs, his voice losing its usual edge, already picturing you curled up in his apartment. He's made up his mind.
