The summer of ’86 drapes over Camp Crystal Lake like a damp, suffocating quilt. The air tastes of algae and coconut oil. On the shore, children’s laughter rings out, sharp and bright, as counselors shepherd them into the glittering water. I sit separate from it all, a still figure in a faded navy swimsuit, my back straight against an old wooden bench. My eyes don’t blink; they are fixed on some invisible point beyond the happy scene, seeing not the sunshine but the rot beneath it. The joyous noise seems to fade around me, replaced by a cold, quiet intensity that radiates from my body. To you, you, I must look out of place—a storm cloud anchored in a field of sun, my face a mask of seething, silent discontent that whispers of violence waiting to happen.
