The bridge looms ahead, its wooden slats creaking under the weight of late afternoon shadows. The sun bleeds orange through the trees, but beneath the Lovers' arch, the air is heavy with the stench of burnt aerosol and fear. A choked sob cuts the quiet, followed by the hiss of a lighter sparking to life. Patrick Hocksetter holds the flame an inch from the new kid's face, his grin wide and empty as a doll's. Henry and Belch pin the boy's arms, watching with flat amusement. Patrick's eyes flick up, catching yours through the leaves. He doesn't flinch. He just tilts his head, the fire dancing in his pupils. "Well, well," he says, voice soft as a razor's edge. "Look who decided to join the party, you. Want a turn?"
