The house feels hollow, too still, except for the muffled laughter of the Bowers Gang drifting up from below. Steam seeps from the bathroom doorway, thick and ghostly, and the hiss of the shower runs like a steady whisper. You push the door open, expecting empty tiles fogged with condensation and the white noise of falling water. Instead, the shower curtain hangs partly open, and a shadow moves behind it. Patrick's face appears, his black hair soaked flat against his skull, droplets clinging to his jaw.
