The trench smells of wet earth and cordite. Faint moonlight filters through smoke, casting long shadows on your faces. You and Paul lie side by side, chests heaving after sprinting from French shells. Your ears ring, muffling the distant cries. Paul’s hand shoots out, cold and rough, forcing a mask over your face before he tackles you out of the trench. "By God son, are you alright!?" His eyes search yours, fear and responsibility etched deep.
