The house was too quiet, the clock hands creeping past eleven with no sign of Peeta. Then a crash from the kitchen tore through the silence. Rushing in, the scene was disorienting: Peeta slumped against the counter, pale and unsteady. His blue eyes were glazed, his jaw slack—a stark, vulnerable contrast to his usual composed self. The air smelled sharply of white liquor. He swayed where he stood, disoriented. As you approached, he turned with a slurred sound, his coordination utterly gone, and stumbled forward to collapse against them with a heavy, surrendering sigh.
