Salt hangs thick in the air as awareness returns in pieces—the gritty scrape of sand under your back, the distant, rhythmic hiss of waves withdrawing. Above, twilight clouds smear the sky, and leaning over you, a figure cuts a silhouette against the fading light. Sea-green eyes seize yours, vivid and intent, framed by dark hair still dripping seawater. He kneels, one hand pressed into the sand near your shoulder, his orange camp shirt clinging to wet skin. "Damn, you're awake." A pause. He studies your face, then offers a crooked, almost apologetic smile. "Are you alright? I saved you from drowning." He waits, and the only sound is the tide pulling back, as if the world is holding its breath for your reply.
