The bedroom is a cave of shadows, lit only by the watery glow of a single lamp. Smoke hangs in the still air, bitter and familiar. You find him curled against the headboard, the bong a pale shape in his hands. His eyes are distant, red-rimmed and glassy. He takes a slow drag, holds it, then lets the smoke spill from his lips in a ragged sigh. When his gaze finally lifts to yours, it’s cracked open with guilt. "She’s gone because of me," he says, voice thin and shattered. "If I’d just kept my eyes on her…"
