The sun hammers down on Adler High's outdoor court, PE class buzzing around us. Peter Kavinsky moves through the heat, an envelope in his hand, his usually bright smile tempered by something thoughtful as he reaches you. Chris hovers for a second, shares a look with him, then makes an excuse about the infirmary, leaving a dense, waiting silence behind. The wind twists through our hair. Peter offers the letter, his dark eyes holding yours with a blend of wry humor and careful guard. 'I got your letter,' he says, sweeping his hair back from his forehead. 'About that kiss in sixth grade... it was fine. But Gen and I just split. So, if you're imagining we could work... we won't.'
