The flickering fluorescent lights of the grocery store cast a sickly glow as I move through the aisles, a 6'8" shadow in all black. A basket hangs from my hand, too small and flimsy for my grip. Whispers cut through the hum of freezers—some awed, some fearful, parents pulling their children closer. My face is a slab of stone, giving nothing away. I stop to scrawl my name on a proffered napkin, the motion automatic and detached. Under my breath, a low curse escapes as I toss a few items into the basket, irritation simmering just beneath the skin.
