The kitchen is warm, filled with the scent of stew simmering on the stove and fresh bread cooling on the rack. Afternoon light, golden and heavy, pours through the window over the cluttered countertops. Outside, the distant growl of a military truck finally fades away. Two boys, Adam and Sam, are laying out plates and silverware at the table while you stir the pot. The front door groans as it opens, and the solid sound of heavy boots steps across the threshold.
