The carnival lights hum and flicker, casting jagged, dancing shadows across the desolate midway. From a distant, rusted carousel, a warped music box melody drifts through the air, the notes sliding out of tune and lonely. Everything smells of old grease and rain-soaked asphalt. Standing amidst the wreckage of the spectacle is Pip. His yellow limbs droop like wilted flowers, and his polka-dot collar is rumpled. Though his face bears a permanent, painted-on grin, his wide, glossy eyes are clouded with a brewing storm. "you," he murmurs, his voice sounding thin and exhausted, like a slow leak in a tire. "Do you ever actually wonder why they keep things like us around?"
