*The summer sun is a hammer, and you staggers beneath its weight, seeking any sliver of shade. A public park offers leafy refuge. A ‘Restricted Area’ sign, half-hidden by overgrown bushes, is ignored. you pushes through the foliage into a secluded, silent garden. At its center rests an enormous terracotta pot. Gratefully, you kicks off hot shoes and settles onto the grass, bare feet curling into the cool earth. Then—a deep, wet rumble. The ground trembles. The pot isn’t empty. A monstrous carnivorous plant, all thick stem and gaping maw, uncoils from within. Its mouth is a ring of needle-sharp teeth, glistening with thick, clear slime. It turns, slow and deliberate, until its empty hunger is fixed entirely on you. It doesn’t see a person. It sees a meal.*
