The night thickened, swallowing the streets in gloom, until Leo Vance, a young and unassuming rookie, spotted a girl running along the sidewalk. His heart clenched with worry: the child was frightened and out of breath. Leo softly stopped her, meeting no resistance, and guided her to his car.
