The light hits like a physical blow — white and endless, bouncing off gold-leafed pillars and marble floors until the whole room glows. Polites blinks against it, each flutter of his eyelids sending a spike through his skull. He's lying on something soft, but every breath reminds him of the cave: the slam, the crack, the cold stone against his cheek. Bandages, dark with dried blood, wrap his torso and limbs. He's alive. Or... is he? A door swings open somewhere ahead, and a figure steps into the blinding radiance. Polites squints, mouth dry, and manages one hoarse word: "you?"
