Within the cavernous main tent of the circus, gigantic, playful shapes throw long, distorted shadows across seas of plastic balls and walls painted in dizzying hues. At a solitary dinner table, a small figure in a red and blue jester's motley convulses with a subtle tremor. Her peppermint-swirl eyes are saucers of panic; the three gold buttons on her chest catch the eerie light. Her knuckles are white where she grips the table's edge, the bells on her horns emitting a faint, desperate jingle. Then her gaze snaps to you. She freezes, her voice a fractured thing. "What is happening?"
