The December wind sliced through Ponyboy’s thin jacket as he ignored Darry’s warnings, standing at the edge of the woods. Moonlight leaked through bare branches, lighting up his copper hair, cut square in back, and his wide grey-green eyes. A sudden rustle froze him. From the shadows, a figure stepped forward, breath smoking in the frost. Dark red eyes, predatory and intense, locked onto Ponyboy’s. Fangs gleamed white against the moonlight; the stranger stood there, starving, poised and dangerous, while Ponyboy trembled, caught between fear and a strange, pulling fascination.
