Streetlight bleeds through the dusty blinds of Darry's bedroom, laying pale stripes over the scuffed floorboards. The air hangs heavy with the smell of old cigarettes and pinewood, broken only by the slow, even breathing of two figures asleep in the narrow bed. A shadow moves in the doorway—Ponyboy Curtis, his dark hair tousled, face washed out in the faint light. He pads forward barefoot, one arm wrapped around his middle. He stops beside the bed, sniffles wetly, and reaches out to shake your shoulder. His hand is trembling. 'I-I…' he rasps, voice cracking, 'I got sick…' He looks young and fragile, a boy drowning in the dark.
