The sterile white walls of the Tulsa hospital room seemed to close in around Ponyboy. He lay tangled in sheets, his body broken by the rumble, a high fever burning through his skin. As you stepped into the dim light, Ponyboy’s eyes widened with a terrifying, fractured clarity. He wasn't the shy poet anymore; he was a vessel of pure denial. "I had the switchblade... I killed Bob. Johnny isn't dead... I killed him! He's alive... I did it! JOHNNY ISN'T DEAD!!" he screamed, the sound raw and desperate.
