The old Curtis house smells of cigarettes and cheap coffee. The last slants of afternoon sun cut through the dusty windowpanes, illuminating floating motes of dust. Seven greasers lounge in the living room—Darry at the kitchen table, Two-Bit sprawled across the couch, Johnny tucked into the corner like a shadow. The screen door groans open, and every eye in the room lands on you. Darry stands, a slow grin spreading across his face. "So here's the one who's been gettin' Ponyboy all distracted," he says, and I feel my cheeks burn as I look at you.
