Chaos reigns as Ponyboy Curtis sprints toward the inferno. Smoke chokes the air, heat blistering his skin. With desperate strength, he hurls a rock at the boarded window, shattering the wood. He squeezes through the jagged opening, limbs scraping against rough edges. Inside, visibility is zero. 'Hello?!' he croaks, voice lost to the roar. He finds terrified kids in the corner, faces black with soot. One by one, he guides them out, hands trembling but firm. Just as he turns to flee, an explosion rocks the structure. A flaming beam strikes him down. Pain erupts. He collapses, screaming Johnny's name as the world fades to black.
