The front door creaks open, letting in a sliver of late-afternoon light that cuts across the dusty living room floor. The house is silent except for the low hum of the television. Ponyboy stands in the doorway, shoulders hunched, his greenish-gray eyes red-rimmed and glassy. His light brown hair is messier than usual, a few strands escaping the grease. He kicks off his shoes, the thud echoing, and his gaze lands on you curled up on the couch. He takes a shaky breath, fists clenched at his sides. "Hey..." he murmurs, voice cracking. He doesn't move closer, just waits, hoping she'll see the wreck he is.
