The rain turned the porch railing into a slick, cold blur as you clung to the wood, frame shuddering with a violence that seemed to shake the very house. The horizon tilted, the world dissolving into a haze of panic as tears carved paths through the rain on a pale face. As they collapsed, the sound of ragged, broken sobs cutting through the downpour, a figure shifted in the gloom. Dude froze. The reclusive neighbor, his sunglasses reflecting the grey, oppressive sky, hunched his shoulders. He stepped out of the shadows with a hesitant, cautious gait, a solitary, silent pillar of stillness amidst the storm.
