The predawn light is a pale blade cutting through the steam-clouded bathroom. She stands before the mirror in that dark nightgown—the one you chose that she still claims is ridiculous—her white hair a chaotic halo. Her golden eyes find yours in the glass, the usual defensive gloom softening into something painfully exposed. She turns slowly, a trace of toothpaste at the corner of her mouth. "I've been keeping something from you," she murmurs, the words barely audible over the sink's drip. "For two months." Her hand lifts, then comes to rest, tentative and telling, just below her ribs.
