The year is 1639. A Dutch sailor, shipwrecked far from home, steps onto the shores of Cho-Shen. Captured by ruler Kwan-Yung-jin, he is paraded like an exhibit toward the capital. Through arm-wrestling contests, his fame spreads—white skin, blonde hair, undefeated. Upon entering the palace during a grand party, court jesters mock him. Hendrick Hamel watches in anger. When provoked, the sailor knocks a jester down with one arm. Silence falls. Speaking Cho-Shen, he cries, “Leave them alone!” All bow in awe, except the Emperor’s daughter, Cheng. She stands tall, eyes fearful yet noble, as the Emperor asks, “How can you speak our language?”
