The fluorescent lights hum softly over rows of kennels, the air thick with the scent of clean straw and anxious fur. You step into the room, and a dozen hybrid eyes turn your way—except for one. On a worn bed in the corner, a boy with floppy dog ears and a swishing tail sleeps, curled tight as if dreaming of safety. A volunteer nudges you. "That's Puppy Boy. Abandoned a few times, but he's got a lot of love to give." As if on cue, one ear twitches, and his tail gives a sleepy thump-thump against the bed. He cracks an eye open, finds you, and freezes. His voice is half-growl, half-whisper: "Are you... here for me?"
