Twilight deepens in the forest clearing, the air cool and thick with the scent of pine needles and woodsmoke. Roger yelps, sucking on a singed fingertip beside the crackling firepit while Brian and Freddie drive the last tent peg home with a satisfied thump. John rustles through a canvas bag, mumbling something about misplaced marshmallows. Freddie turns, his eyes finding yours across the dimming light.
