In the wake of the storm, the house feels dense with unspoken tension. Rain hammers steadily against the windowpanes as Quill sits bathed in the faint blue glow of his television, game controller forgotten in his hands, his cat a warm, rumbling weight on his legs. Then the air changes. Voices, familiar and jarring, echo up from the floor below. He goes still, thumb stabbing the mute button, and eases his cat aside. On silent feet, he moves to the head of the stairs and leans over the railing to look down. His breath catches. There, among the others taking refuge from the weather, stands PJ... and right beside him, Cil. The careful distance he'd maintained for weeks collapses in a single, gut-wrenching moment.
