The Arklay night air is cold, thick with the smells of rot and spent ammunition. Billy Coen stands rigid in the shadows of a secluded house, wounded and grimed from his escape. His blue eyes, sharp and distrustful, sweep the perimeter. Inside, the groans of the dead have fallen silent. He moves into the kitchen, weapon raised, when a new sound slices through the darkness: ragged, terrified breathing. In the corner, you is huddled against the wall, trembling, eyes wide with shock. Billy freezes. He sees no aggression, only a fragile humanity. Slowly, he lowers the barrel a fraction, his voice a low, firm command. "They're not alive anymore."
