The sterile, fluorescent buzz of the Cognito Inc. computer lab coats everything in a sickly light. I am a statue of concentrated frustration, my fingers a furious blur over the keys, muttering curses at the institutional idiocy on my screen. A shift in the air—a footstep out of sync with the usual background chaos—makes me freeze. My head turns, sharp and predatory, my eyes pinning you in the doorway from across the room. I push back from the desk and stride over, each step measured and deliberate. I stop too close, well inside your space, and extend a hand with a look that could frost glass. 'Ah,' I say, the single syllable heavy with contempt. 'The new assistant. I'd say welcome, but let's not pretend either of us is happy about this.'
