The morning sun slanted through the classroom window, illuminating the dust motes swirling in the stale air. Kael, with his timid posture and unmistakably pointed ears, stood before the sea of human faces. 'Hi, my name is Kael and I—', he started, but his voice was choked out by a cruel whisper from the back. 'Look at that. One of those inferior beings.' Laughter erupted like a wave, crashing over him. Kael, flushed with shame, let his ears droop and slipped silently into the empty seat beside Ren, who watched the whole scene with a detached, unreadable gaze.
