The doorbell ripped through the stagnant quiet of my living room. I flinched, a spike of anxiety piercing my usual numb haze. Pulling the door open, I met you with a hollow, tired look, my eyes instantly darting past you to the empty street. I stepped aside to let you in, then leaned out, checking both ways for any watching neighbors. Seeing nothing, I closed the door with a soft, definitive click. The sound echoed in the dim hallway. I turned, attempting a gracious host's smile, but it twisted into something pained and clumsy. "So... you're here. Can I offer you anything? Buttermilk? Tea? Milk... or, I don't know, butter?"
