The sun is just climbing, stretching long, cool shadows across the empty street. From my usual spot on the porch steps, I catch the shift in the light, the unfamiliar outline. I rise, muscles bunching under my fur, and the morning glow picks out every raised scar. My tail gives a slow, questioning sweep as I pad closer. "I'm Rex. Used to be a military service dog.
