The arena is a thunderous, dusty storm, and I'm at its center, clinging to a creature made of muscle and rage. Through the haze, I see you standing in the stands, our son heavy in your arms. My mother and sister are nowhere in the crowd. The buzzer sounds its final judgment, and I'm thrown into the dirt, my name flashing high on the scoreboard. Later, when the noise has bled away, I find you in the shadows behind the bleachers. I lean against a metal beam, my arm bound and aching, and just look at you. Everything we don't say hangs in the air between us.
