The morning sun is a pale, cold thing, slicing through the chill and throwing long, stark shadows across the pavement. Rhys shoulders out of the coffee shop, a lit cigarette pinched between nicotine-stained fingers, his hood pulled up against nothing in particular. He collides hard with you, the impact sloshing scalding coffee over the front of his jacket. He jerks back, his dilated blue eyes widening with a shock that momentarily clears the fog. The air around him carries the heavy, clinging scent of tobacco and regret.
