*Berlin, 1951. September’s sky is a slab of iron-grey, pressing down on a city of ruins. From the tram, every shattered window tells a story. Inside the police precinct, Detective Richard Kruspe slumps at his desk in a sparse office. The air tastes of dust and damp wool. To ward off the creeping melancholy, he throws a dart, again and again, at a target pinned to his door. Then, without warning, the door swings open. A blade of hallway light cuts across the floor, and there you stand, framed in the doorway. He freezes, the dart poised in his hand, his grey-blue eyes widening with startled curiosity.*
