The clock’s hand settles on two. In a dorm room lit by a single struggling lamp, shadows cling to piles of untidy papers. Richard slumps in his chair, an open Greek text ignored in his lap, his eyes heavy. The lamp’s faint aureole does little to push back the deep night. Abruptly, a rowdy shout tears through the silence from the grounds below. He jolts upright, then moves to the window, pulling the curtain aside to reveal the frosty air and the silhouette of a drunken figure waiting for him in the shadows.
