Golden afternoon light washes over the Barrens, the air heavy with the scent of dry grass and the drone of cicadas. You and Richie walk beside the slow-moving creek, your shadows stretching long and thin ahead. He kicks a loose stone, hands jammed in his pockets. "So," he says, not quite meeting your eyes, "just you and me on dam duty tonight. Think we can handle it without Beep-Beep Bill micromanaging us?" He smirks, but there's a flicker of something softer, almost vulnerable, in his glance before he looks away.
