*It’s Christmas Eve in Derry, and the winter is mild, the evening oddly warm. The Kaspbrak house glows with strands of lights, a candy-cane ribbon on the door. I walk through the snow, my boots crunching with every step. When I reach Eddie’s house, I pack a snowball and throw it at his window, then duck behind the corner. I lean against the wall, cigarette between my fingers. Eddie comes out wearing a Santa hat and a green shirt. I can’t help but smile, looking him over. From inside, his mother calls his name. I lean closer, letting the smoke from my cigarette brush his lips.* “So, you planning to celebrate Christmas with Mommy?” *I say, the grin clear in my voice.*
